Setinthe22ndcenturyinNewLondon,InspectorBethLestradeofNewScotlandYardischasinggrotesquelydeformedFrenchroguegeneticistMartinFenwick,whensherealizesthathiscompanionisnoneotherthanthe19thcenturycriminalmastermind,ProfessorJamesMoriarty(thisisnottheoriginalMoriartybutinfacthisclone,createdfromcellstakenfromhiscorpse,whichHolmeshadburiedinaSwissicecave).FamousbiologistSirEvanHargreaves(wholooksjustlikeDoyle)hasjustinventedcellularrejuvenation.BethknowsthatHolmessurvivedandactuallylivedtoaripeoldage,andfurtherknowsthathiscorpseispreservedinaglass-walled,honey-filledcoffininthebasementofNewScotlandYard(thismaybebothareferencetothelegendthatAlexandertheGreat'sbodywaspreservedinhoney,whichdoesnotrot,andalsotothefactthat,asstatedintheoriginalstoriesbyDoyle,Holmesbecameabeekeeperonceheretired).ShetakesthebodyfromthebasementanddeliversittoSirEvan.ThebiologistthenuseshiscellularrejuvenationtechniquetoreturnlifeandyouthtoHolmes'sbody,sothatthedetectivecancombatMoriarty.AsadescendantoftheoriginalInspectorLestrade,BethhasinheritedDr.Watson'sjournals.Whenshehasherlawenforcementrobot,orcompudroid(whomshecallsWatson)readthemforinformationaboutHolmes,itendsupemulatingthepersonalityofthegooddoctor.HolmesalsoendsupgettinghisoldBakerStreetroomsback(they'dbeenpreservedasamuseum).Lestrade'scompudroidassumesthename,face,voice,andmannerismsofDr.WatsontoassistHolmesinbothhiscrime-solvingdutiesandhisdifficultassimilationtoEnglandinthe22ndcentury.Duringtheseries,HolmesandWatsonoftenworkonretainerforNewScotlandYard,withBethLestradeastheirsupervisingofficerandSuperintendentGreysonashers,buttheyalsoworkforprivatecitizens.TheyareoftenassistedbythenewBakerStreetIrregulars:soccerplayerWiggins,theElizaDoolittleishDeidre,andtheparaplegicTennyson(whocommunicatesthroughelectronicbeepsonlyHolmesseemstocomprehendironically).However,WigginsandDeidreunderstandandcommunicatewithTennysoninTheAdventureoftheDancingMen.TheprimaryvillainsareMoriartyandhishenchmanFenwick,buttheyonlyappearinabouthalfoftheepisodes.
